[english.visitkorea.or.kr] Every summer, crowds of visitors flock to Haeundae Beach in Busan, one of the most popular beach areas in the country. Spending a day at the beach is a wonderful summer activity, but don’t miss out on the quiet galleries in the area! Read on to learn more about the galleries, which provide a tranquil cultural component to your beachside vacation.
Goeun Museum of Photography & Goeun Contemporary Photo Museum
Two specialized galleries for photography, somewhat of a rare find in Korea, are located in Haeundae: Goeun Museum of Photography and Goeun Contemporary Photo Museum. Goeun Museum for Photography has a photo archive, organizes premiere local and international photo exhibitions, and discovers and supports rising artists. The two-story gallery boasts an exhibition hall, a seminar hall, and a photo library where visitors can view rare photographs, photo data and more. The photo library hall, which also functions as the gallery’s lobby, offers a seating area and coffee so visitors can leisurely enjoy looking through the gallery.
Goeun Contemporary Photo Museum, the main building of Goeun Museum of Photography, mainly focuses on the contemporary meaning of photo. It showcases exhibitions by both Korean and international photographers. There is a piano near the exhibition hall on the second floor that is used for the gallery’s “Small Music Concert with Photography.” Concertgoers will need to reserve tickets in advance.
Art Space – Alliance Française Busan
Based upon the philosophy of “Alliance Française Busan,” Art Space exhibits a range of art mediums, from paintings, photographs, sculptures, and installations to media art. Though the building is small in size, the gallery is a popular draw, with events planned through the end of 2014.
Toyota Photo Space
A car showroom meets a photo gallery at Toyota Photo Space, which is located on the second floor of Toyota Car Exhibition Hall. Though the gallery takes up only a small corner on the second floor, it still gives the impression that it is a specialized photo gallery. From the gallery, visitors are able to see both photos and new cars on display. Be sure to visit the space to take in photographic artistic philosophy in tandem with high tech, beautifully-designed automobiles. This gallery is an easy five minute walk from the beach.
Banana Long Gallery
Banana Long Gallery is as yellow in color as its name implies. The building stands out on Dalmaji-gil Road, coming from the east side of Haeundae. Originally located next to a railroad, the scenery near the gallery underwent a change when the railroad was completely removed. The interior of the gallery is made with white wood, and has a small, cozy ambience. A wide range of exhibitions featuring young artists are on display year round. Don’t miss the small, unique design art items that are also on display.
Johyun Gallery
Johyun Gallery is perhaps most well-known among the several galleries on Dalmaji-gil Road near Haeundae. The gallery is connected to Café Van, which leads to a maze-like entrance to the gallery’s second and third floors. Visitors can visit both the cafe and gallery, appreciating the photos while enjoying a cup of coffee. After the coffee break and gallery tour, take a stroll on down Dalmaji-gil Road.
