Surrounding the capital city of Seoul, Gyeonggi-do region is a convenient getaway for Seoulites as well as travelers who are in Korea for a limited time. Although Gyeonggi is also largely populated with metropolitan cities just like Seoul, the region displays a much wider variety in ecological aspects as well as natural views compared to its counterpart.

Among the many smaller counties located in Gyeonggi-do, visitors are especially recommended to visit Paju, Goyang and Gapyeong, three cities frequented by international and local travelers. These places will unveil so much more than just city attractions, including famous drama filming locations, romantic places for a stroll, cultural exchanges and more. In addition, amazing photo ops are guaranteed from the multiple spots that you’ll get to know through this article. Although this column only covers a trip for 2 days, if your time allows, we suggest you make as many trips possible with your family, friends, or your other half to share memories.
10:00 AM - Start off your day at Heyri Art Valley

Heyri Art Valley is just a one-hour bus ride from Hapjeong Station in Seoul. The largest art community in the nation, Heyri gets its name from a song farmers would sing as they worked in the fields. The valley is a haven for art of all styles, having been founded by painters, musicians, architects and more. Each building is unique and fun to look around.

The village is best enjoyed by walking around, exploring the interesting shops and stopping to snap a picture now and then. For those who want a bit more culture out of their trip, visit one of the many museums, including the Bohemian Sculpture Museum, Museum of Musical Instruments of the World, or the Money Museum. Afterwards, stop by one of the cafes dotted throughout the village for a cup of coffee or a light brunch.

12:30 PM - Shopping at Paju Premium Outlets

Come to Paju Premium Outlets where you can find over 220 international fashion brands at prices lower than in department stores. Paju Premium Outlets is a three-story building with two wings opening in a circle around a central garden. In addition, the outlet is decorated throughout with charming features here and there like an amusement park. Visitors who are not interested in shopping can easily spend an hour here just walking around and enjoying the ambience.

2:30 PM - Visit Paju Book City

Paju Book City is a cultural complex themed around books and the publishing process. Originally being a field of reeds, the area became populated with publishing companies in 1977. Currently, there are 30-some publishers and over 250 companies related to the industry gathered here. Visitors to Paju Book City can enjoy reading rooms, book cafes, and various cultural activities related to books and printing. Out of the many spaces, one spot you must not miss is the Forest of Wisdom.

Opening in 2014, the Forest of Wisdom is a public library with a collection of over 500,000 books. All of the library books were donated and words cannot describe the feeling upon looking up at the 8m-high bookshelves packed with books; for a book-lover, it is heaven. Recently the number of tourists to this library has been unceasing after the library’s appearance in the drama, “She Was Pretty (2015).”

4:30 PM - Refresh your spirit at Hanwha Aqua Planet Ilsan or Onemount

While trips to Paju center around things to see, your time spent in Goyang will be filled with taking part in various activities, the two most popular of which are visiting Hanwha Aqua Planet Ilsan or Onemount. If you have the time, visit both for a day full of fun but if time is lacking, pick the place that draws your interest most; families tend to visit Aqua Planet, and Onemount is recommended to friends and couples.

Aqua Planet is the largest aquarium in the Seoul metropolitan region and also features a zoo in addition to the marine-life. Visit the second floor to view the many bright and colorful fish and other marine creatures. Children especially enjoy the fourth floor, where they can take part in the unique experience of feeding sheep or rabbits by hand.

Onemount is an indoor theme park made up of Snow Park and Water Park. Reaching from the fourth floor to the rooftop of the seventh floor, the water park is popular in summer, and the snow park, a winter wonderland straight out of a fairy tale, is popular about Southeast Asian tourists year-round.

7:00 PM - Take a light stroll around Ilsan Lake Park

A lush forest and calm lake meet to form the picturesque landscape of Ilsan Lake Park. The largest man-made lake in Korea, the park is an oasis in the middle of the city. The walking path along the lakeshore is exceptionally well-suited for peaceful, leisurely strolls. Visitors in the summer will be delighted by the Spectacular Musical Fountain, a water and light show set to music that plays in the evenings everyday from April through October.

The park is a popular filming location for both Korean dramas and variety programs, appearing in nearly 220 dramas and movies every year. Many people will recognize the park from scenes of “My Love from the Star (2013)” and “The Girl Who Sees Smells (2015).”

8:00 PM - Dinner at Lafesta or Western Dom

End the first day of your trip with dinner at Lafesta or Western Dom. Two of Ilsan’s representative landmarks, many young people enjoy visiting these two centers. Weekdays find the shops filled with workers on break, with families and couples visiting for shopping and dining out on the weekends.

Lafesta is a 6-story building with one underground floor built in a street style. On the other hand, Western Dom is the first large dome-style shopping mall in Korea. The malls have recently become known by word of mouth for trendy fashion items and delicious restaurants.

10:00 AM - Travel to Jaraseom Island and have lunch

Despite being an island in the middle of the Bukhangang River, Jaraseom Island can be reached by car via a bridge. Enjoy the sights of the flowing river on the riverside road or spend a night at the Jaraseom auto campground. In addition to these leisure activities, many people visit for festivals taking place on the island each year. Every fall, the island fills with the sound of saxophones, trombones and trumpets at the Jaraseom International Jazz Festival and winter brings fun activities for all at the Jaraseom Singsing Winter Festival.

Located on the island, Gapyeong Ewhawon Nabi Story is a place not to be missed. The name Ewhawon means “A harmonious garden when two forms meet” and showcases a variety of flowers and plants even in the dead of winter. Visit the two greenhouses to experience spring and summer, as well as get a closer look at many species of butterflies.
The arboretum is largely divided into a tropical botanical garden and a Korean botanical garden. The tropical garden features coffee trees, papaya trees and more plants that grow naturally in tropical and subtropical regions. If you’re feeling tired, visit the Korean botanical garden to boost your energy. The bright and fresh scent of yuja growing on the trees will perk up your mind and body, just like a cup of coffee.

1:00 PM - Gapyeong Rail Park

Added to the Gapyeong Circulating Tour Bus route only just last year, Gapyeong Rail Park is a railbike park along the old Gyeongchun tracks. Departing from Gapyeong Rail Park, the tracks cross Gapyeongcheon Stream and Bukhangang River Bridges, pass through a tunnel of Zelkova trees to arrive at Gyeonggang Station, a filming site of the Korea film “The Letter (1997)” before returning to the departure point. A total of 8km round-trip, the journey takes approximately one hour and 30 minutes. As you pedal along the old tracks, quiet rural villages tucked inside valleys and views of the beautiful blue river will unfold before your eyes.

3:00 PM - Take a memorable photo at Petite France

Petite France is a unique cultural park that is one of a kind, only available in Korea, taking inspiration from the book “Le Petit Prince (1943).” Its exotic look continues to attract visitors but the park also receives a lot of love by film directors of K-dramas and movies, being featured in a variety of works such as “Beethoven Virus (2008)”, “Secret Garden (2010)”, “My Love from the Star (2013)” and more.

The entire village is almost a museum, housing French artifacts and crafts, and you can even find items from the famous novel, commemorating the famous French writer, Antoine Maria Roger De Saint Exupery (1900-1944). You can also watch a small Marionette puppet performance, listen to beautiful notes drifting out of the Orgel House and take part in touring traditional French houses.

6:00 PM - Find peace at The Garden of Morning Calm

The Garden of Morning Calm is the first destination when people thing of visiting Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do. The garden is divided into a number of smaller gardens, each with a different theme, including Hometown House Garden, Bonsai Garden, Moonlight Garden, Sky Path, Garden of Eden and more. Seasonal trees and flower beds adorn each garden, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of Korea’s four seasons throughout the year.

The promenades are lined with trees for enjoyable walking in the shade. Simply walking through the garden, you will immediately feel recharged and rejuvenated by the good energy emitted by the plants.

The diverse beauty presented throughout Korea’s four seasons is indescribably attractive and sync with festivals announcing the beginning of each new season. Among the many, the one visitors should look out for is the Lighting Festival at The Garden of Morning Calm, taking place during the winter months. When the garden lights up at night, it suddenly transforms into an unrealistic, almost fairy tale-like scene, recreating childhood dreams coming into real life.
