[Korea.net] A conference to discuss ways to increase and speed up transportation between Korea and Kazakhstan via the Eurasia Transcontinental Railroad has recently taken place.

On Dec. 7, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Kazakhstani Ministry for Investment and Development co-hosted the Logistics Cooperation Conference in Kazakhstan.

The Eurasia Transcontinental Railroad departs in Lianyungang in northeastern Jiangsu Province, China, hitting the Trans China Railway (TCR). The train then transfers through Horgos in southeastern Kazakhstan to the Trans Siberian Railway, or TSR, reaching Central Asia, Russia and Europe.
The Eurasia Transcontinental Railroad covers the routes on the Trans China Railway (in blue) and the Trans Siberian Railway (in red). It starts from China and runs through Kazakhstan to Russia and European nations. On Dec. 7, the governments of Korea and Kazakhstan co-hosted the Logistics Cooperation Conference to discuss measures to accelerate the transport process via the railroad.
According to the plans, Korean companies will ship their goods from Incheon Port and Pyeongtaek Port in Gyeonggi-do Province to Lianyungang. The cargo will then to be carried to the Eurasia Transcontinental Railroad, before they arrive in Central Asia, Russia or Europe.

The railroad transport is expected to speed up the process of customs and of transferring products to another train. It’s because the Kazakhstan government has designated Horgos, one of the stops in the route, as the “Special Economic Zone,” a zone which will serve as a logistics and industrial hub of the nation. In this sense, the Dec. 7 conference offered a good chance for the participants to talk about investment plans to be pursued by Korean firms in the Horogos economic zone.

“As Astana is one of the leading countries in the transport logistics network across Eurasia, the Korean government will work to diversify transport routes for Korean companies to take advantage of and also to improve transport efficiency. Next year, we will have more talks, not only with Kazakhstan, but also with China, to enhance bilateral industrial partnership,” said an official from the ministry.
