Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH) was founded in 1958 under the supervision of the Ministry of Health. It is a modernised and comprehensive upper first-class hospital with integration of medical services, medical education/teaching, research and prevention as well as health care. At present, the Hospital has a staff of 2,331 and 1284 clinic beds, 34 clinical departments, 10 medical technique departments, 28 doctoral programmes, 1 clinical postdoctoral programme, 47 doctoral supervisors, 1 Chinese Academy of Science member, 1 Winner of National Natural Science Foundation-Outstanding Youth Foundation and Chief Scientist of “973” Programme under the Ministry of Science, 2 Cheung Kong Scholar Chair Professor of the Ministry of Education, 1 selected candidates of National New Century Talents Project.
Based on several generations’ efforts, Peking University Third Hospital has developed to a high-level and large-scale health care provider. Departments of Orthopaedics, Pharmacy (Clinical Pharmacy), Pathology, Nursing, Laboratory Medicine, Gastroenterology, Gynecology & Obstetrics, Occupational Diseases, E.N.T, Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Molecular Biology and Regulatory Peptides were selected for eligibility in the first batch assessment of the National Clinical Specialist Subject Significance.The Spinal Surgery of the hospital is the earliest established and has nationwide strongest reputation. The Reproductive Medicine Centre, which is first founded in China mainland but also remains one of the largest Reproductive Medicine Centre in Asia, the first In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) case was born in here. The Institute of Sports Medicine is the first founded in China and solo-designated treatment and prevention health care centre granted by the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC). The Ophthalmology Department (Eye Centre) plays the leading role on diagnosis and treatment of Ocular Trauma and other difficult and complicated ophthalmology cases. The Gastroenterology department stands in the upper echelons regarding pathogenesis and treatment of ulcer, and diagnosis and treatment early gastric cancer. Cardiovascular medicine department keeps domestic first-class level on percutaneous coronary intervention, acute myocardial infarction "green channel" and the clinical and basic coordinated development The Plastic Surgery department and the Occupational Diseases department were earliest-founded in China and have their clinical characteristics subjects.
In recent decades, Peking University Third Hospital has been improving greatly on its operation and medical services quality level. In 2011, the hospital accepted more than 2.979 million outpatient and emergency visits. The annual discharged patients population was over 65000. The annual operation quantity was over 37000 cases. The average length of stay was 6.87 days. The overall management indexes have achieved advanced level that won praises and honours from the Ministry of Health and Beijing Municipal Health Bureau. 1/3 of all inpatients with Incurable diseasesare from all regions of the country,
Peking University Third Hospital has 16 Beijing Municipal Health Bureau Train Base, 11 Ministry of Health Sub-Specialist Training Base and 6 Ministry Of Health Endoscopic Treatment Technical Training Base. As a clinical teaching medical school of Peking University, the hospital annually accepts over 1000 medical students, 300 doctoral and master level of students for clinical studies. Moreover, the hospital also accepts thousands of doctors for training purposes including 200 Beijing residents’ training task. Every year, the hospital has about 40 life-long training programmes that attract over 3000 students nationwide.
Peking University Third Hospital currently has 3 Innovation Teams (Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine and Gynecology & Obstetrics), 3 Key Labs (Reproductive Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine and Ophthalmology) granted by the Ministry of Education. Currently, there are 33 personnel from 17 departments hold posts of chairman or vice-chairman in the Chinese Medical Association branches. There are 27 personnel from 15 departments hold posts of chief editor or associate chief editor in Chinese science journals.
Peking University Third Hospital has strong social responsibilities and contributes to the health reform. The hospital has progressed greatly and participated in several state level programmes and research projects such as Clinical Pathway, Care Service Excellence Project and Counterpart Support, that positively accepted by related government sectors. They are: The National Advanced Unit of Health Culture, The Nationwide Collective Honorary Title of Medical And Health Industry, Home of Workers Model granted by The National Trade Unions; Science Innovation Hospital Third Prize Granted By Chinese Hospital Association, National Nuring Services Evaluation Excellence Hospital 2010 granted by the Ministry of Health, National Hospital Reform and Innovation Prize 2011 amongst national public hospitals granted by the Ministry of Health, "National Youth Civilization" Honorary (Neurology, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Sports Medicine and Pharmacy)，"Neurology Science" Course led by Department of Neurology was Evaluated As The National Fine Courses, President Chen Zhongqiang Won The Hospital Management for Outstanding Contribution Award Granted By Beijing Hospital Association and Hospital Management Award for Outstanding Contributions 2010 granted by Chinese Hospital Association.
By the end of 2011, the New Outpatient Building and Sports Medicine Building were completed that improved conditions of emergency health care and inpatients, which was a significant decisive achievement reflection of our hospital’s overall construction in the past 10 years.
