Situated in the middle of Insa-dong, a neighborhood popular with tourists due to its abundance of cultural activities, the Kyungin Museum of Fine Art is a pleasant and delightful place for artists and visitors to spend time. Here, traditional and modern culture intermingle through exhibited works, events and the traditional ritual of Korean tea drinking. The museum is built in the style of a hanok, a typical Korean house. It was originally a residential palace for Bak Yeonghyo, a member of the royal family before being converted into a museum. It is composed of six main exhibition halls, a workshop and a beautiful sculpture garden which contains a traditional teahouse. The museum is still imbued with a classical elegance from the past which appeals to modern minds.The museum in the center of a garden ▶ A view of the classical gardenOne of the museum’s claims to fame is the beautiful and classical Korean garden which surrounds it. The sculptures and art installations in the traditional Korean garden add to the picturesque beauty of the museum. The elegant style of the traditional house within which the museum is situated, is in harmony with its leafy surroundings. The museum serves as a place where the classical and the modern meet and visitors can enjoy the building itself as well as the various exhibits they see throughout their visit. Galley No. 1 ▶ Interior view of Gallery No.1 The museum is composed of six individual buildings, consisting of various gallery rooms, including an outdoor exhibition area. Gallery No.1 is a two-story detached building which has the most spacious exhibition hall at the museum, and displays a variety of solo and group exhibitions.Gallery No. 2 ▶ An exhibition hall The two-story building of Gallery No. 2 is made entirely of glass to allow natural sunlight to brighten the whole area and creates exquisite harmony with surrounding nature. It displays large pieces of art in the spacious gallery room, including various contemporary art installations. Gallery No. 3 ▶ A view of Gallery No. 3, rebuilt on the lines of a traditional Korean house The third gallery was originally a mansion for Bak Yeonghyo, who was a high ranking officer during the Joseon Dynasty and is famous for creating the national flag of Korea. Designated as Seoul Folklore Material No. 18 in March 1997, Bak Yeonghyo’s house was famed as one of the 8 largest mansions in Seoul during the Joseon Dynasty; its elaborate and artistic beauty is in a class of its own. This famous one-story gallery shows various Korean paintings as well as traditional art and craft works. Café Dawon ▶ A view of the museum garden The traditional Korean teahouse Dawon is one of the most visited places at the museum for anyone who wants to experience the aroma of Korean herbal tea. There are 15 different types of Korean tea available; while drinking your tea you can enjoy some Korean folk music.
