Dalian Jiaotong University (DJTU), was founded in 1956. It was formerly the Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock School, and then, in 1958，Dalian Railway Institute, administrated by the Ministry of Railway of China. In Feb. 2000, it was put under the administration of Liaoning Province, jointly sponsored by the central and the local government, with the latter being the main administrative body. In May, 2004, it was renamed as Dalian Jiaotong University, which is the only higher educational institution characterized in rail traffic and transportation in the northeast of China. In 2010，Liaoning Provincial Government and the Ministry of Railway signed an agreement on co-sponsoring DJTU.

The university consists of two campuses in Shahekou and Lushunkou Districts, Dalian, covering 862,000m2 occupied with 471,000m2 infrastructures of classroom buildings, laboratories and engineering training centers with a total equipment value amounting to 140million RMB. The modern library, with its construction area of 430,000m2, contains 131, 0181 books, and 18,800 kinds of domestic and foreign electronic magazines. Lushunkou Campus has developed into a national first-class campus with library, dormitories, dining-halls, sports ground, gymnasium as well as stores.

The university has set up its campus network of thousand trillion core, gigabit backbone, total network bandwidth 400M, and other systems as office automatic system, academic affairs online, research management, campus card and other public services, offering fast and sufficient information for academics, research and management work.

Subjects and Programs

DJTU has 16 schools and departments conferring bachelor degrees, master degrees and doctoral degrees. Its different grade programs are ranked with 2 first-grade post-doctoral research stations and 2 first-grade doctoral programs with 7 second-grade Ph. D programs, and 12 first-grade master programs which contain 43 second-grade master programs, 9 engineering master programs, and 2 higher education master programs. Its mechanical engineering, material science and engineering and traffic and transportation engineering are the three provincial-level key subjects, encompassing 11 second-grade programs. Moreover, 5 programs are accepted in the “Programs of Special Distinctive Subjects for Strengthening the Core Competitiveness of Universities” by Liaoning Province. Mechanical engineering and its automation and material processing engineering are two “promotion programs”, mechanical engineering and material science and engineering the “distinctive development subjects”, and traffic and transportation engineering the “nurturing program”.

The university offers 42 undergraduate programs on engineering, management, science, liberal arts, economy and law with business administration and computer science and technology programs conferring second bachelor degrees.

Of the engineering programs, DJTU’s mechanical engineering and its automation, vehicle engineering, material forming and control engineering, and civil engineering are the national first-class special programs and the “Special Programs of Liaoning Province” along with its software engineering program. The university has developed into one of the institutions of Liaoning Province that fosters the most socially needed human resource with its vehicle engineering program, which also has become a reform program of Liaoning Province together with the software engineering program.
