Also called Dongmyo (“Eastern Shrine”), Donggwanwangmyo (“Eastern Shrine of King Gwanu”) is a shrine located just outside the Heunginjimun Gate, one of the four main city gates of Seoul which is designated as the Treasure No. 1, established to honor the life and achievement of Gwanu (or Guan Yu), a military general of the China’s Eastern Han Dynasty. The shrine began to be built in 1599 and completed two years later.
